Hermès Scarf 90 cm – Pierre Loti ou l’âme voyageuse – Cyrille Diatkine (2009) – Black
VENDU
This is a piece of absolute modernity, a graphic "UFO" in the Hermès universe. Issued only once, in 2009, the "Pierre Loti ou l’âme voyageuse" scarf (Pierre Loti or the Travelling Soul) is signed by Cyrille Diatkine. The artist pays tribute to the writer-traveller Pierre Loti (whose real name was Julien Viaud) through a bold "Pop Art" collage: memories of Istanbul, fantasies of Japan, Egyptian statues and exotic silhouettes float like colourful holograms against the darkness of the ground. A highly sought-after collector's piece, extremely rare in black. In excellent condition, with box. See the pink version of this scarf.

A word from Diane This scarf is a manifesto of contemporary art. I have a secret preference for this black version because it is incredibly sophisticated. The choice of the black ground is masterful here and makes the colours stand out like neon lights in the night. It is the "statement" scarf par excellence. Finding it with its box is a rare opportunity for collectors looking for the House's "Arty" pieces. Sublime.
From the booklet accompanying the scarf, Spring 2009:
"This scarf revisits the epic of Pierre Loti and his insatiable thirst for elsewhere. His wanderings inspired many writings, sketches and photographs. A multitude of images gave birth to this scarf, a kind of puzzle bringing together the many facets of the writer's life: the young army soldier, the proud French camel, the naval officer, the Turkish dandy, the eccentric orientalist, and many more besides. Signs of places visited, photo collages, objects and portraits… the scarf becomes an exotic travel journal in which we find this famous sentence: 'Oh, how pleasant it is here, but how harmful is this desire that seizes me, always wanting to leave again.'"
