Art and History of this Hermès Scarf

Le Timbalier (The Kettledrummer) pays tribute to an emblematic figure of the French cavalry. Until the end of the Second Empire, the kettledrummer – a mounted percussionist – accompanied the regiments in full dress. Placed at the centre of the scarf, this elegant rider beats time with panache, in a pose at once martial and theatrical. His ceremonial uniform is adorned with sumptuous passementerie: braids, fringes, cartisane work and cords vie with one another in refinement. On the kettledrums, the coat of arms with two interlaced "L"s evokes the age of the kings. His mount, for its part, is decked out with a richly decorated saddle and trappings, worthy of an imperial parade. This scarf is also a discreet nod to the history of Hermès: looking up in the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, visitors will see the statue of the kettledrummer standing on the roof of the house.
